Our arrival score

Istanbul Airport has outstanding transport connections and an enormous range of facilities, but its sheer size changes the arrival experience. Long walks between distant gates are possible, transfers can involve several stages, and passengers using special assistance benefit from planning how their connection will work before travelling.

One terminal · long distances

Istanbul Airport is genuinely huge

IST does not require a bus or train between separate passenger terminals. International and domestic operations sit under one enormous roof.

The trade-off is distance.

Moving walkways help along the longer corridors, but a connection between distant gates can still involve a substantial walk.

The longest gate-to-gate walks can take around 30 minutes.

Connecting at IST

Connecting at Istanbul Airport: how far is your next gate?

At Istanbul Airport, connection time depends heavily on where your arriving and departing gates are. Some connections involve only a short walk. Others can put your next flight on the other side of the terminal.

Nearby gates / same areaAround 5–10 minutes
Mid-distance gateAround 10–15 minutes
Distant pierAround 20–25 minutes
Very long gate-to-gate connectionUp to around 30 minutes

These are planning ranges rather than guaranteed walking times. Your route depends on the gates assigned to your flights, and moving walkways help along longer corridors.

Is your baggage checked through?

For an international-to-international journey on an eligible single through-ticket, checked baggage can normally continue to your final destination.

If your flights are on separate tickets or do not qualify for through-checking, the process can be different.

Accessibility & assistance

Wheelchair assistance at Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport's size makes advance assistance particularly useful if long walking distances are difficult.

Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM)

Arrange assistance before you fly

Request wheelchair assistance through your airline before travelling and check that the request is confirmed in your booking.

For Turkish Airlines, wheelchair requests currently need to be submitted at least 48 hours before the flight to guarantee an approved request. Later requests are handled according to availability.

Request it early, then check that it is actually confirmed on your booking.

What happens when you arrive?

Wheelchair assistance at IST can involve more than one stage rather than one staff member remaining with you for the whole journey.

Depending on the assistance you need and the aircraft or gate, airport teams may use powered wheelchairs, manual chairs, cabin chairs or a passenger buggy.

During a connection, assistance can involve different staff members or waiting points rather than one continuous escort.

  1. Aircraft
  2. Assistance pickup
  3. Powered / manual mobility assistance
  4. Waiting / handover point if required
  5. Next gate or Arrivals

The exact equipment and number of handovers can vary.

Travelling with your own wheelchair?

Decide where you want it returned

If you're connecting at Istanbul Airport with your own wheelchair, make your preference clear at the ORIGINAL check-in desk before the first flight.

Istanbul handover

Want your wheelchair back at IST?

Tell check-in staff that you want your wheelchair returned at Istanbul for your connection and ask whether it can be tagged for gate or ramp delivery at IST.

Check the baggage or mobility tag before leaving the desk so it is clear that Istanbul, rather than your final destination, is the intended handover point.

Once you're onboard, it is also sensible to remind the cabin crew that you're expecting your own wheelchair when you arrive in Istanbul.

Onward handover

Prefer it at your final destination?

Tell check-in staff that you want your wheelchair checked onwards to your final destination and confirm how it has been tagged.

If your wheelchair is travelling onwards in the hold, you will use the airport's assistance equipment during your IST connection.

If you use a powered wheelchair, contact your airline before travel because battery and equipment information may be required. Check current airline mobility-equipment guidance.

Staying in contact with your family

Wheelchair assistance is primarily a transport service for the passenger, and members of the same travelling party may not always move through every stage together.

IST is large enough that being temporarily in different areas of the terminal can make mobile contact genuinely useful.

Need to contact assistance in Arrivals?

There are four assistance phones for passengers with disabilities in the Arrivals greeters' hall. These can be used to contact the ground-service operators.

Transfer meeting point

Meeting your transfer at Istanbul Airport

IST's Arrivals greeters area is large, and different transfer providers use different exits and meeting locations.

If you've pre-booked a transfer, use the exit, meeting code or representative instructions supplied with your booking.

Into Istanbul

Istanbul Airport to the city centre, Taksim and Sultanahmet

Istanbul Airport sits well outside the central tourist districts, so the best option depends less on "the city centre" and more on which neighbourhood you're actually staying in.

Istanbul Airport FAQs

How long can it take to walk between gates at Istanbul Airport?

A nearby connection may only involve a short walk, but the longest gate-to-gate journeys can take around 20–30 minutes on foot. IST is one very large passenger terminal, and moving walkways help along the longer routes.

How do I arrange wheelchair assistance at Istanbul Airport?

Request wheelchair assistance through your airline before travelling and check that it is confirmed on your booking. Turkish Airlines currently asks for approved wheelchair requests at least 48 hours before the flight; later requests depend on availability.

Can I get my own wheelchair back at Istanbul Airport during a connection?

Ask at your original check-in desk before the first flight. If you want your wheelchair returned at IST, tell staff that Istanbul is where you want it back and ask whether it can be tagged for gate or ramp delivery there. Check the tag before leaving the desk. If you prefer to receive the wheelchair at your final destination, ask for it to be tagged onwards instead. The exact handling can depend on your airline, itinerary and wheelchair type.

What happens if my own wheelchair is checked through to my final destination?

You will use airport-provided mobility assistance during the IST connection. Depending on the assistance required, this can involve powered or manual equipment, a buggy and one or more staff handovers before reaching your next gate.

Can I purchase an eSIM after I arrive in Turkey?

International travel eSIM stores can be inaccessible from within Turkey, so it's better to arrange yours before you travel. If you're using Breeze, buy and install your eSIM before you fly; an eSIM you've already arranged can then be activated when you arrive.

Is there a hotel inside Istanbul Airport?

Yes. YOTEL operates inside Istanbul Airport and can be useful for passengers with longer connections.
